2017 Annual General Meeting at Wakefield Because of ill health the 2017 AGM took place without the outgoing Chairman Joan O’Brien. Pictured here is Ann Harding, the incoming Chairman getting her badge of office from Sue Spencer the outgoing Area President…

Janet Ratcliffe here getting her badge upon becoming First Vice Chairman…

and a look at the audience gathering in the Hall prior to the meeting.

The lovely flowers were designed by Sheila Rodgers (as was the pedestal in the entrance hall). After luncheon members and guests were entertained by “The B Team” comprising Eileen Barraclough, Judy Watker, June Borrowdale and Sue Maddocks, compèred by Tony Cleaver and assisted (if that be the word) by your Webmaster Peter Mathers presenting an entertainment called “The West End comes to Wakefield”. Here are some pictures from the event…

We are delighted to announce that the North East Area has a new Flower Club! Based in Richmond, North Yorkshire, the Antheia Flower Club is a contemporary Club that meets at Richmond Town Hall. They are on Facebook (here is a link ) so please support them by “liking” their page, or why not go to a meeting to show support? Their name comes from Antheia, one of the Greek Graces. She is, of course, the goddess of flowers!

Diamond Anniversary Luncheon 2017 Members and friends got together at the beginning of April to celebrate the anniversary with a tasty lunch at the ever-reliable York Racecourse followed by a sparkling demonstration by James Burneside from Northern Ireland. Here are some pictures from the event taken by Anne Lindsay.

Diamond Dazzler Weekend Please note that because of circumstances beyond the control of the Area, this weekend away has had to be relocated to the brand new Cottingham Road campus of the University of Hull and will be a great opportunity to experience the buzz of the 2017 City of Culture – more details about that here. The bedrooms are of a higher quality than those at Scarborough and there are lifts to all floors. All the events and visiting demonstrators are exactly as advertised.

Education Day 2017 took place at Notton Village Hall, Wakefield on Saturday 4 March and the Area were delighted to secure the talents of Alison Cooper from Cheshire Area for the day. Alison was, you may remember, the winner of the 2015 Designer of the Year competition that was at Blackpool and her design there made copious use of Japenese kyogi paper. The day’s designs that Alison taught used this paper in the construction of the designs, as these pictures show.

(Other makes of glue are available!)

Refreshment time!

This was the wonderful end result of the stage after Vanessa Wellock’s demonstration at the 2016 Annual General Meeting at Wakefield

The Executive, Representatives and Deputies of the North East Area of NAFAS wishes all Members and Friends a very happy and peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2017.

The Area’s Annual General Meeting took place as usual at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield on Saturday 19 November. The only change of Executive member on this occasion was the retirement of the Projects Officer Jenny Freeman.

Pictured above is the audience just prior to the start of formal business.

…and here is Jenny Freeman giving her valedictory speech as retiring Area Projects Officer.

The North East Area held a very successful joint Demonstrators and Speakers Refresher Day at Wiggington Recreational Hall, York on Saturday 1 October. We were lucky to be able to secure the services and expertise of Michael Bowyer from Wessex and Jersey Area who is up here as the Chief Adjudicator for the Combined Speakers and Demonstrators Tests that are taking place on 3 and 4 October. Delegates were able to brush up on their demonstrating and speaking skills. Pictured are some of the attendees together with (centre) Michael Bowyer at a plant identification exercise
